The Return of Bill

Yesterday morning, the weather here was foul. It has been raining so much lately that the ground is squishy. It just can't hold any more water. The rivers in the area are up at the tops of their banks. The river Nith in Dumfries has burst its banks at least once, causing the White Sands car park next to the river to be closed.

When I let Polly out in the morning to pee, old Bill was there. He'd slept in the greenhouse to stay out of the rain. As it wasn't actually raining when I let Polly out, I just let her stay outside to play with Bill for a while.

Then, as I was at the computer I heard the rain start again. I went to the kitchen door and let Polly in. It was then that the sleet started coming down. I couldn't let poor old Bill stay out in that. I let him into the extension and gave the old blind guy some rugs to lie down on.
Polly wanted to get in there to play, but I wasn't going to have two dogs tearing around, knocking over materials. Just look at her. She really likes Bill.

Innes (Bill's owner, our neighbour and friend) picked Bill up later on in the morning. Henry and I said that if Bill wanted to live here, we were okay about it, but I don't think Innes wants to give up his dog. He said that Bill is about 15 years old. He thought that as he was now mostly blind, he'd stop his wandering.

Poor Polly. Sitting there staring through the windows in the door at her friend.

Oh, I'm dreading the day you'll have to post that Bill has passed on. It makes me sad just thinking about it.

Hope you're staying warm and dry.

I think it's really good of you to look after Bill like you do. I would do the same, I like dogs very much.

I don't have one, but I'm a dog lover, too, and I wouldn't be able to resit Bill.

I'm a big softy and I hate to think of him outside in this weather (but I know he's a real working dog and is used to it).

The whole Polly & Bill thing is lovely - and I hope we can read more about it soon.
