Brave Soldier

Because George is my natural son with all the inherited imperfections that go along with that, yesterday morning he got braces on his teeth. Sorry kid.
He's going to have them on his teeth for a couple of years, from 13 to about 16. Welcome to the beginning of the awkward years my son.

There was no point in telling him that in three years he will have a set of beautiful straight teeth because yesterday and today, it hurt. It was scrambled eggs for lunch and dinner and lovely oatmeal porridge for breakfast this morning. To add insult to injury he is no longer allowed fizzy drinks, toffees, caramels and other sticky sweets. He has also lost the ability to bite into an apple.

His next appointment is on the 6th of June. I don't want to tell him that even though the next appointment will be sore, it won't be as sore as these first days. He won't believe me.

My sympathy goes out to George. Althought it was some fifty years ago I can still remember wearing braces. I hated it. Just about the time your teeth stop aching from your last visit to the orthodonist...it was time to go again.

Then there were those dang rubber bands you had to wear. Don't know if they still have to wear those or not these days.

And yea...my mom tried to convince me how beautiful my teeth were going to be. Bah...humbug - then you wear these damn things was often the response that ran through my mind!

Both No1Son and No2Son endured braces on their teeth. Crowded teeth inherited from me! Both had estimates of 2 years, both had the braces for more than 3 years before they came off. And they grumbled, had miserable bad tempered pain-filled days, complained, couldn't eat all the crunchy food that they craved..... but just look at their teeth now! Straight, even, easy to brush and floss, no cavities... totally worth it. What a shame it's not hereditary and could be passed on to their children!

Just tell George to hang in there Peggy.....it is SO worth it. I know it seems like a long road ahead, but it does fly by. I went through it with every one of my kids. When the twins got braces, I kind of got a "two for one" deal...kinda. At that point, anything was helpful. You have a handsome boy there Peggy...who's going to be even more handsome.

Well worth it indeed! My Annie is even asking for braces (for her straight teeth) because all her friends have them!

Hang in there George.

Poor George, that's a long time to wear those.

Our Mimi has been waiting, and waiting to lose one last tooth so she can get braces...little does she know.

Peggy, I wore braces for three years, had the thingy that goes in the roof of the mouth, rubber-bands, the whole nine. My teeth are still as crooked as a roomful of politicians. The idiot orthodontist never pulled any of my teeth AND my wisdom teeth came in about 6 months after I got the braces off and pushed everything even closer together. As SOON as Handsome George starts getting his wisdome teeth, you should look into having those suckers yanked out!

Poor George. I feel his pain. Or rather, I felt his pain when I was around his age. It is worth it but it sure didn't feel that way at first.

Hang in there George!

No more fizzy drinks?! That's ROUGH. Poor guy. It'll be worth it in the end though.

Poor George. My Julie went through the same thing, including pulling out her a couple of teeth. By age 16 her teeth looked perfect and then her wisdom teeth started growing and pushing all the other teeth together.
At sixteen, there's nothing a mother can force her daughter to do any longer. She didn't want to have them out, which means that she went through all this for nothing.
I too wore braces and hated it. And went through the wisdom teeth bit. Sometimes I wonder if it's all worth all that pain AND money!

I have passed on the sympathy messages to George.

I had braces on my teeth when I was his age, so I can also sympathize with what he is going through. I can also tell when he is trying to milk it for all its worth.
